4/7 JAPANESE WINE

The main ingredient of wine is grapes.

Grapes do not require much rainfall.

When we think of plants that grow well in dry regions, only a few come to mind—such as oranges, olives, and grapes.

I remember a wine producer once saying this.

Of course, grapes still need some water, but they can tolerate dry conditions quite well. In that sense, they are a very convenient crop.

In Japan, when we think of grapes, we often imagine table grapes like Shine Muscat.

However, wine grapes are quite different from those we eat.

They have thicker skins and more seeds.

Compared to Shine Muscat, they feel less juicy and more concentrated.

This lack of juiciness is actually what makes them suitable for winemaking.

You don’t usually see wines made from Shine Muscat… or so I thought.

But when I looked it up—

There are some! Shine Muscat wines actually exist. That was surprising.

Well, technically, it is possible to make wine from them.

There are wine regions that produce wines from Muscat varieties, after all.

In this case, it comes down to whether it makes more sense to use Shine Muscat—originally developed as a table grape—for winemaking, or simply enjoy it as it is.

Personally, I would really like to try it.

Still, using a premium table grape for wine… that’s quite a niche idea.
